AI is more likely to change your job than to erase it overnight — but some tasks inside your job will absolutely be automated, and it's already happening. The useful question isn't 'will AI replace me?' It's 'which parts of my work will AI take, and what's left that only I can do?'

Tasks get automated, jobs evolve

Think of the typist. Computers didn't 'replace typists' — typing became part of everyone's job. The same is happening with AI: the repetitive parts of almost every job (drafting, summarising, sorting, scheduling) are shifting to AI, while the human parts (judgement, relationships, accountability) become more valuable.

In South Africa, this is actually a moment of opportunity. The country's AI skills gap is real — 'South Africa's AI future is leaving millions behind', as one report put it. Being one of the people who actually knows how to use AI is a genuine, low-barrier advantage.

The real risk

The biggest career risk isn't being replaced by AI. It's being replaced by someone who uses AI better than you. Being early and competent is the best protection there is — and the barrier to entry has never been lower.
