🔒 Is AI safe for my business? A South African owner's guide
5 min read · Updated 2026-09-13
The short answer
AI is a tool, like email or spreadsheets. It's safe if you use it sensibly — and the sensible rules are simple.
The simple rules
- Never paste customer ID numbers, bank details, or confidential client data into a public AI tool.
- Treat AI output as a first draft, not the final word — especially on facts, prices, and legal matters.
- Be aware of POPIA — don't feed personal information into tools you don't trust with it.
What's actually fine
Using AI to draft replies, write social posts, summarise your own notes, and brainstorm — all perfectly safe. The risk is only when you feed it sensitive data or publish its output without checking.
